Varicose veins are larger, darker in color and tend to bulge. These veins are veins under the skin of the legs, which have become wider, bulging, and twisted. They are very common and do not cause any medical issues usually. These varicosities occur in the superficial veins, which occur under the skin and are less vital for venous flow.
All of these veins contain one-way valves to ensure that the blood flows towards the heart. When these valves fail, it allows blood to flow backwards instead and results in an overload of pressure, which causes the veins to collapse so they can’t close anymore. Blood then flows back into the leg along these veins and causes varicose veins to develop.
Weight gain, some medications and prolonged sitting or standing are some causes of unsightly veins, as are pregnancy or hormonal changes.
